Do I need a better theme?

I had switched to the WordPress default theme some time ago on this blog. The main reason was to test some plugins in a neutral scenario, but it sort of grew on me and I never changed it. I guess that’s a good sign for a default theme, but maybe time has come to add a bit more flair here.

The thing is, which theme should I use? I’ve been thinking about switching my personal blog to a wordpress photography theme, after all, I use it mostly for photos of the kids! So maybe I could use that theme over here.

Not sure though what do you like to see on a WordPress Guru’s blog?

WordPress 3.0.2 Available

WordPress 3.0.2 is now available as a mandatory security release. More from the WordPress blog:

WordPress 3.0.2 is available and is a mandatory security update for all previous WordPress versions. Haiku has become traditional:

Fixed on day zero
One-click update makes you safe
This used to be hard

This maintenance release fixes a moderate security issue that could allow a malicious Author-level user to gain further access to the site, addresses a handful of bugs, and provides some additional security enhancements. Big thanks to Vladimir Kolesnikov for detailed and responsible disclosure of the security issue!

Download 3.0.2 or update automatically from the Dashboard > Updates menu in your site’s admin area. You should update immediately even if you do not have untrusted users.

WordPress for iPad and iPhone

There’s a new version of the WordPress application for iPad and iPhone with some great new features:

  • Video. Record, upload, attach, and play videos within the app. Yay for being able to catch your friends’ and co-workers’ most embarrassing shenanigans creative moments with iPhone video and publish them immediately for all the world to see on your WordPress site.
  • A total rewrite of the way local drafts are handled, to prevent the unintentional loss of your pending posts.
  • Autosave/post revisions. Bam! One of the “oh, thank goodness” features of the web app makes it into the iOS version.
  • Easier setup. Faster and easier process for adding your sites to the app.
  • Media Library. We’re gradually getting closer to the media management you’re used to in the web app.

Some great goodness in there. You’ll soon be able to get everything bar the pedestal sinks in these applications. Now .. who out there is still using the web interface? I know I am ;)

WordPress for Blackberry

I’ve just read that WordPress for Blackberry 1.4.3 has been released. Many big improvements have been made for devices running OS5.0 or higher, including:

  • Improvements to the post GeoTagging feature. The app allows you to choose a location from a list of predefined options: GPS, contact entry in the address book, manually inserting an address, recently selected, clicking on a point in a map.
  • Preview Improvements.
  • Bug fixing.

It’s a good addition to your arsenal if you happen to be a BlackBerry user, regardless of whether you have a blog about ballet or one about reviews of the best Branson vacation package. The fact that you can edit your blog and post new content on the move is pretty powerful.

There’s a new version of WP Auctions in town, the plugin that turns your WordPress blog into an fully fledged auction site. The new version has some new features, like the ability to customise the automated emails sent by the plugin, the image upload process has been improved and there’s now a facility to allow remote debugging (if it’s ever needed).

The great thing about the plugin is that it allows you to auction anything you like on your site, whether it’s a Mustang or mbt shoes. Give it a whirl, there’s even a free version for you to try.

How are you finding WordPress 3.0?

Well, WordPress 3.0 has been around for a couple of weeks now and I’m hoping you’ve all upgraded your blogs. I’m curious to know how you’re faring with it. Personally, I’ve had no problems at all, even rolling it out to different blogs. I haven’t had much chance to use many of the new features, but it’s great to know they’re there if I need them.

I know there are a number of videos that can show you the new features down at WordPress.TV, it’s no HDTV, but it’s a great way to learn about your favourite platform. Check it out!

Fixing: Briefly Unavailable for Scheduled Maintenance

If you’ve been keeping on top of your WordPress updates using the automatic upgrade feature, you may have run into a problem immediately after upgrading. A message that prevents access to any page on your blog, “Briefly unavailable for scheduled maintenance. Check back in a minute”. This can happen particularly if your upload hasn’t completed correctly and returned an error.

Cause of the Maintenance Message

During an automatic upgrade, WordPress places a file in the blog root directory called “.maintenance” to prevent visitors from being confronted with ugly, broken pages during the upgrade process. That’s a great little built-in feature, but if the upgrade gets interrupted or fails for any reason, that file doesn’t get deleted and nobody, including you, can access your blog.

Removing the Maintenance Message

All you have to do is delete the .maintenance file from the blog root directory. Simple as it gets. After you’ve deleted the files you should be able to access the site just fine, but you may have to run the automatic upgrade again.

Simple isn’t it, no need to get sweaty pal,s and have to break out the hand dryers. Funny how sometimes the solution is really simple, isn’t it?

WordPress 3.0 is here!

It’s been released! WordPress 3.0 has hit the streets and is ready for everyone to download. It comes with a whopping 1217 bug fixes from the previous version and has a bunch of new awesome features. Theme designers can now allow custom menus, there’s the ability to create new post types and headers and backgrounds can now be configured using functionality that’s baked into the WordPress core.

The best bit however is the combined core between WordPress and WordPress MU. This means that you can start with a single site installation and grow it into a multi user site. So you can start with a wedding site, and grow a new blog on wedding clothes, one on wedding napkins and one on wedding flowers.
