WordPress 2.7 – Smooth rollout

20060618 - the mess that is my computer right ...

I’ve rolled out WordPress 2.7 to around 15 blogs so far and haven’t had any issues at all. I’ve had a couple of friends who have had problems, but it was always plugins that caused a problem. It is imperative to remember to deactivate plugins before pushing an update out. Ok, strictly speaking it’s only those that modify database tables that need deactivation, but for the normal user, deactivating all plugins is a sure way to make sure you won’t have any problems.

The great news is that the next update of WordPress will be pretty easy, as the software now takes care of itself. You could compare it to taking one diet pill and not having any weight problems ever again. Upgrading is a matter of going to your Tools menu and selecting Upgrade. Goodbye FTP, goodbye Fantastico; WordPress just rocks!

Upgraded to WordPress 2.7 Beta 2

I’ve just pushed this blog up to the next beta of WordPress: 2.7 Beta 2. A number of issues have been fixed including the only problem I have hit so far (Auto-Upgrade failing because of file permissions). Apparently there were also issues with areas of the Dashboard, warnings, previews etc which are all listed on the post above.

I must say I do like a lot of the new features in this version, especially the ability to upgrade WordPress and install plugins right off your blog. It’s a great story if you want to minimise server provisioning impact and improve roll out times. You can literaly roll out a new blog (including plugins) in a few minutes without ever needing to open your FTP client! Just sit back in your brand new shiny home theater seating; pipe your PC to an iMax screen and enjoy the show! (where’s the popcorn?)

WordPress 2.6.3 available

A minor update to WordPress is available today (version 2.6.3). It was caused by an upgrade to one of the components that WordPress uses and is not really all that critical. Here’s the blurb about it:

A vulnerability in the Snoopy library was announced today.  WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard.   Although this seems to be a low risk vulnerability for WordPress users, we wanted to get an update out immediately.  2.6.3 is available for download right now.  If you don’t want to download the whole release to get the security fix, you can download the following two files and copy them over your 2.6.2 installation.

  1. wp-includes/class-snoopy.php
  2. wp-includes/version.php

With WordPress 2.7 coming down the tubes, this may well be the last WordPress update you install manually but as the dashboard shows that there’s a new version available, this may cause a number of people to download it, even if it is a minor update. You can’t really help it, almost like grabbing at a bunch of promotional pens just because they’re there. The next version of WordPress though should make is much easier to update, so there will be no reason not to have the latest build really. I must say, it does make things easier from a PC support perspective when you can easily keep your software up-to-date. It does eliminate any problems caused by old or incompatible versions of software trying to live with other pacakges.
