WordPress App for LinkedIn

Do you use LinkedIn? If so, you’ll be interested to learn that there’s a LinkedIn App that lets you integrate your blog habits with your LinkedIn universe. Watch it in action:

It doesn’t matter whether you’re blogging about your MBA results or that deal you made with the Phentermine company; this App is a great way to keep your contacts updated with any new developments on your blog.

WordPress needs your icons

WordPress Fluid Icon

WordPress 2.7 will have a brand-new look around it and be much prettier than previous versions. To make this happen the development team are sprucing it all up and are looking for someone with graphical experience to contribute a set of icons. Here are the requirements:

The icons:
We’ll need icons for each of the main navigation sections, plus a matching pair of list/excerpt view icons for the table screens like Edit Posts. That’s a total of 13, and for the navigation icons we’ll also need a larger size for use in the screen headers. Some of the sections have natural iconography, while others may be more challenging. The sections are: Dashboard, Posts, Media, Links, Pages, Comments, Appearance, Settings, Users, Plugins, Tools.

The style:
Icons should be subtle, with a classic/designed look, nothing cartoonish. Thin lines. Maybe a little old-fashioned looking. They’ll be grayscale by default, possibly with a color version for active menu items.

Do you think you can help? If so head down to their blog and get in touch. If it were PHP I might be able to help, but my graphical skills leave lots to be desired. Last time I drew a plane, someone thought it was a Delsey luggage, so I’ll leave this to someone else!

WordPress one of most popular websites

Day 90/365 : Autumn symphony

It’s great to hear that WordPress.com has been ranked number #33 in terms of most visited websites in the world. When you consider it’s competing with websites like news sites (CNN, BBC), social networking websites (FaceBook, MySapce) and many others; that’s a pretty good darn result.

There’s really one of the great things about WordPress. It doesn’t really matter whether you have a blog about bamboo blinds, wedding favors or fart cushions, WordPress can provide a great platform to get yourself launched into the great big wide world.

WordPress 2.6.3 available

Snoopy as

Image via Wikipedia

A minor update to WordPress is available today (version 2.6.3). It was caused by an upgrade to one of the components that WordPress uses and is not really all that critical. Here’s the blurb about it:

A vulnerability in the Snoopy library was announced today.  WordPress uses Snoopy to fetch the feeds shown in the Dashboard.   Although this seems to be a low risk vulnerability for WordPress users, we wanted to get an update out immediately.  2.6.3 is available for download right now.  If you don’t want to download the whole release to get the security fix, you can download the following two files and copy them over your 2.6.2 installation.

  1. wp-includes/class-snoopy.php
  2. wp-includes/version.php

With WordPress 2.7 coming down the tubes, this may well be the last WordPress update you install manually but as the dashboard shows that there’s a new version available, this may cause a number of people to download it, even if it is a minor update. You can’t really help it, almost like grabbing at a bunch of promotional pens just because they’re there. The next version of WordPress though should make is much easier to update, so there will be no reason not to have the latest build really. I must say, it does make things easier from a PC support perspective when you can easily keep your software up-to-date. It does eliminate any problems caused by old or incompatible versions of software trying to live with other pacakges.

Akismet now has stats

The new version of Akismet now has a brand-spanking new feature: stats! It also has some performance improvements and better responsiveness, but the graphical representation of your spam statistics is definitely a major selling point (well, if you had to pay for it, it would be). Anyway, here’s the blurb:

If you upgraded to Akismet 2.2, you likely noticed a cool new feature: Akismet stats. …

Akismet stats track your comment metrics, including missed spam, false positives (Akismet thought it was spam, but you disagreed), and Yummy Pie, which displays your ham vs. spam count in a nifty pie chart.

What’s ham? The good stuff. Delicious, legitimate comments. Spam is the non-legitimate filler that Akismet excels at blocking.

Nice huh? Well, the major point for me is that is blocks spam pretty successfully, with is a major boon as anyone working in PC Support will attest to. But the graphs to add a nice touch and I for one am happy to see them there.
